After Applying for Financial Aid

After your information has been submitted to the central processor, they will determine your expected family contribution (EFC). Your EFC is calculated by using what is called Federal Methodology, a formula that is used for all students. This EFC is then used by Colorado State University, and other schools you’ve listed on the FAFSA, to determine your need and eligibility for financial aid. You can estimate your EFC by utilizing the calculator found at www.finaid.org.

The schools you listed on your FAFSA should receive the results of your application electronically. If you provided an e-mail address on your FAFSA, your Student Aid Report (SAR) will be e-mailed to you; if you submitted a paper FAFSA or didn't provide an e-mail address, your SAR will be mailed to you.

When you receive your SAR, follow these steps:

1. Read the SAR and review all items.
2. If you need to make corrections, follow the instructions.
3. If no corrections are necessary, keep this report for your records.
4. The number in the upper right hand corner (below the date) is the amount of the EFC.

The school uses your EFC to determine the kinds and amounts of aid they are allowed to award students. In order to determine your financial need the following equation is used:

Cost of Attendance at Colorado State University (minus) EFC (equals) financial need

If Student Financial Services needs additional information, we will notify you by e-mail (or in writing for new students). You can also check to see if we need any additional information and download requested forms on RAMweb.

When Student Financial Services has collected all the necessary documents to complete your file, we will send you a paper or electronic award notice. This packet of information will also include promissory notes for loans if applicable. You can view your electronic award notice and submit electronic promissory notes for some of your loans via RAMweb. Please read your award notice and follow the instructions provided.

All financial aid is automatically credited to your University student account. Credited aid in excess of the University Charges will be refunded to the student. (For more information choose the “Paying Your Bill” link under the Student Billing tab above.)
