Colorado State University - Study Abroad: Applying for Aid

Study Abroad: Applying for Financial Aid

You cannot postpone your graduation in order to study abroad and receive financial aid. In these cases, participation must be at your own expense.

1) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov

2) Most of your financial aid eligibility will be based on costs as if you were studying on campus in Fort Collins. Any expenses you incur above these costs may be covered, in some cases through the Federal Direct Loan program.

3) The Financial Aid/Study Abroad Certification Statement must be submitted to the Study Abroad Office to ensure consideration of the financial aid awards. Delays in submitting your paperwork will cause additional complications in receiving your financial aid or result in ineligibility of financial aid for your program.

Deadlines

Student Financial Services deadlines:

The Financial Aid/Study Abroad Certification Statement and a letter of acceptance (if applicable) must be received in the SFS office by May 1 if you are planning to study abroad fall semester and December 1 if you are planning to study abroad spring semester in order for your financial aid to be processed before you depart.

Office of International Program deadlines:

For Colorado State sponsored programs, refer to Colorado State's Study Abroad web site for Colorado State sponsored program application deadlines.

For CSU authorized programs, contact your program sponsor.

Alternative Loans

If you will be applying for an alternative loan to cover your Study Abroad costs you need to complete an application with your lender of choice. If you do not have a lender of choice, we can provide you with a list of lenders you may want to check out.

Summer Study Abroad Programs

There is a limited amount of financial aid for summer semester. If you are interested in receiving financial aid, you will need to complete the Summer Application, available on RAMweb beginning April 1. To be eligible for financial aid, you must be enrolled in at least 6 credits.
