Applying for Financial Aid

1.  Create an FSA ID

  • The  FSA ID is a secure way to confirm your  identity when accessing your financial aid information.  It must be used to  electronically sign Federal Student Aid documents including the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Students, parents and borrowers are required to use an FSA ID, made up of a username and password,  to complete the FAFSA.

2.  Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • The FAFSA is the federal government's application to determine financial aid eligibility for most types of financial aid
  • Complete the FAFSA as early as possible each year
  • Use federal tax return information to complete the FAFSA.  If you have not completed current year taxes, you can use estimated figures.  We encourage you to use the  IRS Data Retrieval Tool  once Federal tax returns have been filed.  Otherwise, we may ask you to provide a tax return transcript, if selected for verification
  • List Colorado State University-Fort Collins on the school section of the application.  This will allow us to receive your  FAFSA information. Our school code is 001350

3.  Verify Information is Correct on Your Student Aid Report (SAR)

  • The Central Processor will send you a SAR with your FAFSA information.
  • Review all information for accuracy.
  • Use FAFSA On the Web  to make corrections, if necessary.
  • Keep submitted information for your records.

We will notify you, via e-mail, regarding your next steps in the financial aid process

If you currently have a Personal Identification Number (PIN),  you will need to replace it with a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) in order to access Federal Student Aid Systems. You can link your Federal Student Aid PIN to your FSA ID. This allows you to immediately use your FSA ID to access your personal information on any of the Department of Education websites that require an FSA ID.  Once you create your FSA ID, it will replace your PIN.
