Applying for Financial Aid for Study Abroad

You cannot postpone your graduation in order to study abroad and receive financial aid. In these cases, participation must be at your own expense.

1) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

2) Most of your financial aid eligibility will be based on costs as if you were studying on campus in Fort Collins. Any expenses you incur above these costs may be covered, in some cases through the Federal Direct Loan program.

3) The Financial Aid/Study Abroad Certification Statement must be submitted to the Study Abroad Office to ensure consideration of the financial aid awards. Delays in submitting your paperwork will cause additional complications in receiving your financial aid or result in ineligibility of financial aid for your program.

Deadlines

The Financial Aid/Study Abroad Certification Statement (SACERT) questionnaire must be completed on the study abroad's online application site: studioabroad by May 1 if you are planning to study abroad fall semester and December 1 if you are planning to study abroad spring semester in order for your financial aid to be processed before you depart.

For Colorado State sponsored programs, refer to Colorado State's Study Abroad web site for Colorado State sponsored program application deadlines.

For CSU Affiliate, Non-Affiliate and Direct Enroll programs, contact your program sponsor.

If you will be applying for an alternative loan to cover your Study Abroad costs you need to complete an application with your lender of choice. If you do not have a lender of choice, we can provide you with a list of lenders CSU students have used in the past.

There is a limited amount of financial aid for the summer semester. If you are interested in receiving financial aid, you will need to complete the Summer Application, available on RAMweb beginning April 1. To be eligible for financial aid, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 credits.
